Communication and team value

Communication is the process by which information is exchanged and understood by two or more people, usually with the intent to influence or motivate behavior (Daft & Marcic, 2017). Communication is an important aspect of everyday life. It plays an important role in building and maintaining trust between two or more people. This is because miscommunication could lead to distrust and a bigger problem that could even break a relationship. Effective communication is an essential element of management, especially the leadership aspect of management. Leaders are communication champions who inspire and unite people around a common sense of purpose and identity (Kaiser, 2017). An obstacle to effective communication is being a poor listener which includes only listen to facts instead of idea. To prevent this from happening, a dialogue is encouraged better than discussion as it let people seek to understand and listen to the theme and ideas. Besides, I also often use these tips on how to be assertive (Molinsky, 2017):

  • Start with a short and simple statement on how I feel about the other person
  • Describe how it could give a negative statement
  • End it with a feeling statement.

I do strongly believe in the power and value of the team. A team is a unit of two or more people who interact and coordinate their work to accomplish a common goal to which they are committed and hold themselves mutually accountable (Daft & Marcic, 2017). The effective team characteristics that I hold are trust, healthy conflict, commitment, accountability, and results orientation. I believe that the value of a team is important as one in need of others to produce a better outcome or result. I also follow some of these tips (Hunckler, 2017):
  • Share before you are ready
  • Have a difficult conversation
  • Critique in love
